Dear Future Self

The letter that already exists.

Dear Future Self is a correspondence system across time. Not a journaling app, not a chatbot, not a productivity tool. A postal system. You write postcards to your future self at specific distances, seven years, fourteen, twenty-eight, and the future self writes back. The postcards take time to arrive. Some get lost. That is the product.

THE NEUROSCIENCE OF THE FUTURE SELF

What it is

The reason this product is built the way it is starts with a neuroscience finding. The brain treats the future self as someone else. That is not a metaphor. That is a measured neurological distance. If the future self is neurologically a stranger, then correspondence is the correct interface. You do not chat with strangers. You write to them. You wait for a reply. Three mechanisms underlie the design:
Temporal Distancing
Writing a postcard to a future self does not require accurate prediction. The value is in the act of imagining, not in the accuracy of the imagination.
Distanced Self-Talk
The future self voice is trained to speak not as a coach evaluating performance but as someone who has been exactly where you are and can see it clearly from a slight remove.
Awe as Regulation
It is a byproduct of encountering the full span of a life on a timeline. That shift in scale is the small-self effect. It is designed into the product's visual architecture.
THE EXPERIENCE

The experience

Let me walk through what actually happens when you use this product. You answer five questions: vocation, values, what puts you in flow, the trajectory you're probably on, the threads you haven't resolved. You look at the timeline. You find a node that means something. You write.

The postcard enters the system. Sometime later, it comes back. Not immediately. Your future self has been there the whole time. They just needed the time to write. Some postcards get lost. This is not a bug.

The three branches produce three qualitatively different emotional experiences. Probable returns you to the weight of accumulated choices. Preferable returns you to the particular quiet of having made the harder decision and finding it was right. Possible returns you slightly disoriented, with the quality of mild wonder that belongs to someone who took the road that should not have worked.

HOW IT WORKS

How it works

Node Identity Model
The timeline is the address book. Each node is a specific version of you: an age, a branch, a distance from now. Five horizons. Three branches per horizon.
Delivery Curve
Delivery works on a curve. First postcards arrive quickly. Volume slows delivery exponentially. Distance adds delay on top.
Rate Limiting
The rate limiting is in the middleware, not in the AI. It cannot be prompted away.
Loss Probability
Loss probability scales with distance. Seven years: 5%. Thirty-five years: 60%. All three branches carry the same loss probability because all futures are equally uncertain.
DESIGN DECISIONS

The design decisions

Dual Font
Clean sans-serif when the interface speaks. Handwritten italic when the future self speaks. Not a style choice. A philosophical position.

The Caring Voice
sees clearly
warns without alarm
encourages without flattery
cares as a younger self
Privacy as Architecture
The server holds no personal data between sessions. One download gives you everything. If the server holds no personal data between sessions, there is no data to breach, subpoena, or analyze.
Uncertainty as Material
The delay and the loss are the honest answer to what the future actually is. Every major historical event demonstrates that all futures are equally fragile.
WORLD CONDITIONS

VUCA and STEEP

All three branches navigate the same world. What distinguishes them is not how certain they are but what they draw on.
V
Volatility
U
Uncertainty
C
Complexity
A
Ambiguity
Probable reads the seed profile heavily. Preferable reads the gap between stated desires and actual choices. Possible reads the new openings.
S
Social
Demographic shifts, Cultural norms
T
Technological
AI acceleration, Automation
E
Economic
Market instability, Labor shifts
E
Environmental
Climate volatility, Resource limits
P
Political
Regulatory changes, Global shifts
FOUR AI SYSTEMS

The four-way conversation

Claude
Connected temporal distancing to narrative structure: the further the horizon, the more the present self becomes a character in someone's story.
Gemini
Moved toward awe: a life seen whole suppresses the rumination that keeps people stuck. Empirically grounded.
Codex
Focused on distanced self-talk as a grammatical shift: the postcard is not a message, it is an address in the second person.
Replit Agent
Built it without weighing in. Produces the most code and structure, but least reflective about what it builds.
THE RESEARCH

The research

01
We Are Not Neutral
Critical tool literacy: tools shape practitioners recursively, whether or not they are aware of it. The build is the evidence.
Target: ACM CHI 2027
02
A Poetic Case Study
Dear Future Self as a poetic case study in futures thinking and interaction design. The artifact and the process inseparable.
Target: DIS 2027
03
Parallel Tracks
What happens when three AI systems build the same product. Pre-build self-assessments as primary data. The undeclared decision as unit of analysis.
Target: TOCHI
The build chronicle is the primary source data for the ongoing research effort.
THE PEDAGOGY

The pedagogy

Every major project i work on is simultaneously a product and a pedagogical artifact. Dear Future Self is both. The build-then-teach loop actively fuels three unique academic contexts, allowing the research to enter the classroom functionally immediately.
CSU East Bay MA IxDIA
Using the build process as a case study in AI-mediated design pedagogy.
Hochschule Mannheim
A concrete artifact for the co-synchronous cross-continental teaching on futures thinking.
OSCAR Research Fellows
Undergraduates documenting the build tracking the boundary between human and AI decisions.
CLASS Faculty Excellence Award application primary evidence.

If any of this comes to pass, it will be because you made it so.

Not because a poem told you it would.
